How old do I have to be to register for the classroom instruction?

You need to be at least 14 1/2 years old to take the class.

Is training available for any age, such as older adults?

Yes. Please call to inquire.
Can I take behind-the-wheel training with Total Control Driving Academy regardless of where I took the classroom training?
Yes. We will request a letter of classroom completion and provide you with your Blue Card. Call us for details.
What should I bring to my behind-the-wheel lesson?
You MUST have your permit, sunglasses or a hat are helpful and wear appropriate shoes. Tennis shoes are best. No sandles/flip-flops.
What happens if I miss a classroom session?
Make-up sessions are available. Usually there is one make-up day for each session, otherwise you can come during the next session. Talk to the instructor to arrange what day would be best. 
What do I need to know about my Behind-the-Wheel lessons?
It consists of 3 (2 hour) sessions for a total of 6 hours. Your first lesson should take place 4-6 weeks after you receive your permit. A minimum of 30 days should be between lessons to allow for practice. All sessions should be completed within 12 months of the student receiving their permit.
Is there an app for logging supervised driving?
Yes. The App for logging hours is called RoadReady
This meets all requirements as the Supervised Driving Log. You must print out (export) a hard copy to bring with you on the day of test. They will not accept electronic version.

How much practice driving do I need to take the road test?
A minimum of 50 hours with a licensed driver at least 21 years of age. 10 of those hours should be night driving.
What happens if I miss a behind-the-wheel appointment?
A missed appointment can be made up. A 24-hour notice is required or an additional fee will be charged.
What do I need to know about scheduling a knowledge (written) test?

Bring your blue card, identification, social security number, corrective lenses (if needed), and payment for the permit application.

What do I need to know about scheduling a road test?
Tests can be scheduled over the phone at 651-284-1000 or online at https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/locations/Pages/find-office-locations.aspx.  You will need your permit number, date of birth, and a daytime phone number to schedule.
Where can I take the permit and road test?
What should I bring with me for the road test?
  • Instruction permit

  • Proof of insurance for the vehicle to be used in the road test
  • Proof of driver education
  • Parent or guardian
  • Cash or check (no credit cards)
  • The vehicle used to take the test must open from both the inside and outside.  The headlights, taillights, turn signals, and brake lights must be in working order. Seat belts must work properly.
